Hi,

I am brand new to this forum and I just bought a Subaru WRX STI (2008). It is being shipped so I wont have it for a few weeks.

I would like to put a nice system in it for under 2000 bucks. Is this possible? I don't need a really loud system, I just want quality sound. I have absolutely no knowledge of stereo equipment either. I want to buy all the equipment online and have it installed professionally.

I do want the following:

1. DVD/NAV head unit.

2. If I can go without subs, it would be nice considering its a hatchback. But if you guys think they are necessary I could get some small ones.

3. All the equipment must add up to under 2000$.

Please tell me everything I will need (I am a beginner) and what to keep in mind. I have looked at the Kenwood DNX5120/7100 dvd/nav units. I have no clue as to what type of AMPS or subs. The car comes stock with 8 speakers so does that mean I have to buy 8 speakers? How many channels will my head unit have to run?

Please give me a really basic begginer rundown of how to start out.

Thanks in advance!

two grand is more than enough for a decent stereo. Do some research on this site and you'll get all the information you will ever need.

from the sounds of it, you dont want anything too outrageous. There are plenty of DVD players out there with navigation options on them. Check out http://www.sonicelectronix.com for some examples (there is both flip-out dvd players and double-din dvd players)

As for subs, i would reccomend one for frequency-range playing purposes. Just get a 10" and throw it in the hatch. That will be plenty. I reccomend image dynamics for a good sound quality subwoofer that does well in small sub boxes.

To improve overall sound, you could also get a nice component speaker set for your frontstage and power it with an amplifier.

either way, read around here, check out some online stores, and pick out what you like. The possibilities are **** near endless with two grand.

^^^ wont need much else besides those websites.

Thanks for the advice!

say i were to buy the Kenwood DNX5120, it says its only a 4 channel. Will that power all the speakers in my car? If not, how would I do it?

You can get a really nice system in it. One suggestion though, you WILL need a sub. They don't have much room for speakers. Very little clearance. You'll have to use spacers and angling to get them into the stock location without visible modification. Because of the size restrictions, the speakers you probably will end up putting in will probably not throw enough bass out to make the system sound full.

Have fun, they're fun cars man.

The HU power should not be used. Get an amplifier to power the speakers.

Some good brands to look at:

Sundown Audio

Rockford Fosgate

Kicker

Hifonics

Speakers/Subs:

Image Dynamics (said)

Ascendant Audio

Fi (subs)

Sundown Audio

Soundsplinter

Boston Acoustics

Pheonix Gold

There are also a lot of good DVD/NAV units out there. Pioneer and Alpine make really nice ones.
