i found a 61 continental in pretty decent shape body/interior wise, but wasn't able to look under the hood because the dealership was closed. anyone know anything about these cars? what to look for? what to ask about? what goes bad around a certain mileage these kinds of things?
it's > 40 years old. If it's the stock motor, expect a full overhaul soon. Lincoln in their infinite wisdom liked to make oddball motors...so a simple swap will not be so simple.
it originally ran on leaded fuel -- if it never had a valve job with hardened seats, expect the motor to ping like crazy due to running unleaded. Chances are (with the price of gas) they did not run premium with an octane boost.
Given that....just expect to rebuild soon.
the thing weighs **** near 3 tons, expect the suspension to be shot.
expect a little cancer in the rear panels.
expect some exhaust work. If you redo it, make it original. It'll be a little pricey, but the sound of that motor stock >>>>> the sound of that motor with a cheap exhaust system.
If it does have an exhaust leak or if you do go el-cheapo on the exhaust, expect ricers to want to race you everywhere you go.
Change out the master cylinder for a dual. Stopping 3 tons without brakes isn't pleasant.
the hood ornament hurts...bad. so careful when around it.
if you're seriously considering it, don't think of it as an investment. Those cars are fuxing gorgeous, but don't resell for an incredible amount even when fully restored.
if i think of more i'll chime in.
