18" re xxx

if you want it to be an actual upgrade closer to 6 or 8 cubes... 4 cubes the coil wont take enough power to use the stupid amount of xmax the sub has.. Give it alot of room and some decent power (2kish) and it'll be sick. If your gonna give it little power or not use a very big box then skip it.
This.

And sealed would work fine, so long as its set up properly. Ported enclosures will actually utilize their enormous xmax less than a sealed system would, and would place more strain on the coil thermally, which is not really the new XXX's bread 'n butter.

The new XXX has developed a poor reputation, imo, because RE suggests too small of enclosures, because very few people would entertain buying a sub for their car that wants 50% larger boxes than their counterparts. In home audio, this isn't really a problem, and these drivers would work outstanding in an HT setup. But they recommend too small of enclosures, people use their recommendations, and then are less than impressed with their corresponding performance.

The 05' is a random Chinese wholesale dime a dozen POS just like the BTL's look at it...It's a fugging btl...The new ones have way more money invested in actual R&D and investment in custom basket/construction...They developed a good reputation with the old ones, and that created a devoted following...They are a better company now worth more money.
The new ones certainly do have more proprietary parts on them, to accommodate the massive excursion potential. But you dont seem to realize the old XXX was hand-made, in the USA, and was one of the first drivers to utilize xbl^2. Not sure where you get 'Chinese wholesale random dime a dozen POS' from that, or why you think its just like a BTL. Is it because it uses a standard 12-spoke? Either way, you are way off base on the original xxx.

Yes if anything, I can always move the sub to home theater duty.
