16+ kHz equalizing

as most of you know ive got an audiocontrol EQX which i've been messing with for the past month or so. what im wondering is what is the "ideal" or "good sounding" response when adjusting the cut/boost transition from 8 khz to 16 khz?? do the majority of sound quality competitors have an inclining slope from say 8 kHz to 16 kHz when reading their RTA read-out? if so, is it a steep slope? i ask becuz i read in an AudioControl tech sheet that 16khz frequencies and above have a LOT shorter wavelength than low low frequencies. if wavelength has nothing to do with equalization sorry.

8K Hz is the "S" in speech? Most people's voices can't go that high. Maybe you're referring to sibilance?

Sound Quality competitors go for flat frequency response. So, if you have a dip between 8K and 16K then you would boost it. If you're wanting to compete or really serious about this then use an RTA when adjusting the EQ. If you're not, then just mess around with it for what you think sounds good.

I'd try to avoid boosting as much as possible. Yeah sibilance is around 8k, so if that's a problem try that area. Most people don't really notice many EQ changes one you get past the 10k region. It may stop some subconcious problems like bad imaging or headaches, but you probably won't hear the difference as much, which is why an RTA can help.

i kept eveything flat and boosted certain frequencies. people always say to cut instead of boost but if i turn the input gain down (as much as the boosted frequencies' maximum) arent i compensating for all the boost?

yeah, your compensating for the frequency boost, but your also lowering the unboosted frequencies. You'd be better off just keeping everything flat and adjusting it with an RTA, to obtain a flat response your going to need an RTA anyways

i know but i dont have access to an RTA at all in this stupid city of san diego where every local shop that i call to ask about an RTA acts like im being a dicc just becauase im offering to give them money to use their RTA as if im gonna throw it in my trunk and peel out the sheisty *** bastards. anyone know where i can get a g0ddammn RTA to use? any national franchises that would have them to use?

Try a studio or a Pro audio rental house. they'll have them.
