I'm getting a deal on 12" w7 that has some cosmetic damage, the dude says that the outer cone has a hole in it but is just comsmetic, and the bottom cone which is the noise cone is still in perfect shape... here are some pics, worth the $150?

I wouldn't buy it.

If you wanna recone it, it would cost you 350 bucks plus shipping both ways plus you need to bring it to the authorized JL dealer you bought it from with your receipt in hand so they can send it in for you...

So I would say NO.

Well its true the outer cone is just a dust shield. But, with that sized hole, it makes me wonder what happened, and if the incident knocked the vc out of alignment (would be surprised if it didnt). "Testing" the sub with an ohm meter would not reveal that sort of damage.

Unless i could check the speaker for myself before buying, I would also say no.

if it plays free air and there's no sign of voice coil rubbing and it reaches full excursion cleaninly, tell them you'll do 120. u could probly find a way to ghetto patch that up and it'll be fine, and a good woofer for 120....no one is gonan give them more than 120 for that....

Can't really push as much air with a hole :p

The biggest problem is the hole will undoubtedly get bigger over time, maybe not right now of course, but it will get bigger. I personally think a hole that size completely unbalances air pressure on the outside of the sub, although of course it is much less and not as important as air in the box. Usually small punctures etc don't do much but, that hole might be big enough to mess with sound, plus like I said im pretty sure it will get bigger

if you know a way to patch it up wicked cheap then pay 120 for it

Otherwise, don't touch it

im sure the guy is desperate to sell it so, you shouldn't have a problem talking him down

take a test listen and if it sounds good then buy it. If you're going to use it you will need to seal up that hole in the dustcap cone, otherwise when the sub plays it won't pump air through the vents and over the voicecoil which could damage it. Use a rigid piece of plastic and some epoxy to seal it up.

i would have paid 120 for it.

its a ****in dustcap. you can order new ones from places like RE and partsexpress. you would have an ugly cone on the woofer, but some ca glue and another dustcap would have patched it up, it would have added a bit of moving mass to the cone, but oh well. im sure it would have sounded fine anyway. id of cut a bit more off the cone with a knife, taped over the coil hole so no debris got in there, then cut more off the cone evenly with a dremel or maybe just a razor blade, vaccumed it all out nice and then did some sugery with glue and a spare inverted dustcap from something like the RE XXX... might have had to get an 18" dustcap and measure the diamater of the cone of the w7 and trim the 18" back to fit, and took a sharpie and wrote W8 on it lol. but it would have worked no problem.

i doubt the coil will be missaligned because somone knocked the cone while it was moving. hell, even just cutting as much of the outer dust cap off, and throwing a regular **** cap over the former hole with a bit of ca glue would have workd. just had to mount it inverted is all. nobody would have known.

sorry man. its not hard to fix, but it is hard to make it look nice. if you could have scored a new w7 dustcap from JL, then you could have overlapped the new one onto the old one with some CA glue and nobody would have ever known to begin with...

oh well. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

hell. tell him to ship it to me for 150.

how about that?
