12w6v1 surround tore/split :( How to fix?

Hey guys. I've got a 12w6 in my car that's pretty old now...it's been played pretty hard a long time and the foamish surround has given way into a split/cut about 3 inches long. What would you guys recommend doing to repair this? Can one simply purchase replacement surround and re-do the entire srround? Or would it be 'good enough' to glue the tear shut? If so, what glue would you guys recommend? Thin CA would be pretty brittle...i would imagine some kind of mildly flexible glue would be best? Any input would be much appreciated.

20$ to replace the surround huh? That's certainly worthwhile. I'll call the local audio place and see what they'll charge.

Edit: oh, polecat...well ****. Any suggestions on the best glue to repair with?

Edit2: The local audio place said they could have it sent off to JL to have it repaired for the low, low price of 260$, LOL...and the w6v1 is not even listed in the repair booklet, that's for a w6v2. He's going to call JL and ask what a w6v1 surround repair would cost. He seems to think it should be less than 260$ //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

honestly, I don't think you'll find a new surround, for $20....if so, they have to disassemble the entire cone assemly for a rebuild.

if it's 3" long, honestly, time for a new sub, that one is trashed.

**** dude, trash my entire 12w6 because of a ****ing tear in the surround? I'm not made of gold ****in nuggets FFS //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif wtf i can't believe it could be that difficult to fix //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Well, JL told the audio store it should just be thrown away. Apparently they have no upgrade program from v1 to v2 for this scenario and won't fix it. I'm in a state of shock...perfectly good motor and all other components of the speaker seem fine, the ****ing foam surround gets torn and they think i should drop 500$ to replace the mother****er. The audio shop thinks they could glue the ****er together for a low low price of 40 or 50$ with some extra strong rubber cement of some kind

why not try a replacement surround even if it does not match perfectly...The woofer might still work... The shop I had some swap meet subs done by back in the day use some generic *** surround it was not a perfect fi so they just overlaped part of it to seal it off. it was generic foam surround when is what I believe the Version 1's used..... I don't know if this is an option or not but I think it would be better than glue. Like I said it cost me $20 to have my sub fixed this way and it is still working to this date (home audio sub).

Maybe you can find a piece of surround material and just glue it on the backside or something to seal it up I'm not sure.

I'd try calling another shop. Don't give up so easy. I
