I'm sorry, but opinions are not welcome when there are facts. The facts are that you have experience with drivers in an enclosure not suited for the drivers to perform well at low frequencies. Every driver has a different design and purpose. Each driver performs differently in different types of enclosures with a different frequency response in each. This is what decides the low end extension. Most people don't strive to have decent output around 20hz in a car environment as most musical content exists above this. So then why would manufactures design 8" drivers to play that low when most people aren't looking for output that low? That is why you have probably only had experience with 8"s not playing as low. The installation is just as much of a factor as well. Most people cram 8s into a small enclosure because they want to save space, which is why they bought 8s. Well, there goes any chance of low end. Also, Fs or the manufacturer's frequency response spec of the driver changes depending on the enclosure and is NOT a way to determine low end extension. That Dayton HF 8" I linked could easily drop with a flat response to 20hz in about 2.75 cubic feet tuned around 18hz or in a transmission line. I know of many 12 and 15" subs that couldn't get that low, even in similar enclosures due to their design. You keep speaking about distortion yet I don't believe you really know what that is. Most drivers exhibit 10% distortion or more in creating the audio signal... kind of makes that .01% THD on amps seem pretty insignificant. What you're describing is probably over excursion due to a number of things but this can be done at many frequencies and they will all sound terrible.
