Because tube amps are costly to produce. Tube amps have much better clipping and smoothing of the signal vs A/B amps or D amps. What matters about an amp is how much power it produces without overheating and with reasonable quality what it does when it starts to clip.

So then given two properly rated amps that don't overheat, there is no objective measure of amp quality?

There are plenty of objective measurements - the debate always centers around what's audible and what's not.

There are people out there who wholeheartedly believe a tenth of a percent of THD is perfectly audible to them, but most anyone who understands or even thinks they understand the science of the situation will tell you they're full of it, but the debate goes on.

It's like comparing a BMW to a Kia. A kia's not a bad car, it will exceed the speed limit just like a bmw, it gets decent mileage just like a bmw, it has a lot of the same options a bmw does. But I think most people recognize the BMW as the higher quality car. Amps are a lot the same.
