What's so terrible about 6x9's? And how would the Dayton drivers outside their proper enclosure compare to a cheap set of 5.25 or 6.5'' components?

Would it be silly to buy a pair of, say, Dayton B652s, remove the drivers from the enclosure, and mount them in a set of those Metra 6x9 mounting brackets? Of course, they wouldn't sound nearly as good as they do in their wooden cabinets, but would they sound comparable to, or better than, a...

Either way, I installed them, and they're definitely a significant improvement from the originals. Of course, that's no surprise considering that the rubber surround on the originals had completely rotted away. There wasn't really any... speaker... left of those...

So, what exactly makes the dayton woofers sub-optimal?
