Okay, what will I run into if I'm over my optimal amount of space?

Okay, so if sharing is not gonna hurt anything, will I need to make sure I have enough space for each speaker? I mean lets say that each speaker's optimal airspace is 2 cu. ft., does that mean I'd need to have 4 cu.ft. total, or will 2 cu.ft. shared be okay?
