If your screen controls both the HVAC and the stereo-- sounds like you have to keep that screen.... unless you refit the HVAC with the system that came on cars without the digital/video HVAC. Sounds like a PITA. I would start by digging up a HVAC diagram so you can see how your system functions.

YOur head unit tied in with the HVAC controls.... to what purpose? So you can add bass to the blower motor? No-- HVAC and audio are separate items-- however one may be physically close or stacked on another and one usually makes install/removal of the other more difficult.
