In response to the OP.. I dont disconnect my negative cables when working on stuff. Call me a badazz.. but I figure its all off as long as the car is.. just remember what wires are live and what arent.

You will be fine. Even if it the + touches the remote terminal, it wont hurt anything, the amp just wont shut off. However, if it touches the ground terminal, or the metal frame of your car.. thats a different story.

If you still have your stock battery.. and especially the original OEM battery terminal clamps, thats probably the problem. Ive seen so many crazy things happen to a car because of a crappy connection to a crappy battery. Car wont turn over, lights dim, alarm goes off, gauges bouncing around...

Still have these.. these are all very strong batteries, resting voltage on a few is 13V. The one C&D 92ah is only a little over a year old!

Id get a 15" of some sort with a 3" coil.. something that can take the power. If you dont have much airspace to work with, like me in my car, gotta have a beefier sub and more power to throw at it..
