    how thick

1/2"??? From 7-8 layers? That's gotta be some thick matting y'all are using. Typically, 1/4" is fine, depending on the sub you are using. If you're planning a Brahma with 1000 watts flowing to it, 1/2-3/4" would be better. Thicker is always better, just not always necessary. I've got 7-8...

New to this, got a couple of q's

The fleece is unnecessary. Just use fiberglass mat right over your masking tape. The mat will make a fine mold, probably better than the fleece - and will be far less prone to breakage when pulling it out of the car. Skip the fleece for the mold - totally unnecessary. ~HH

    Fiberglassin questions

Juse use straight-up fiberglass mat for the first layer or two (the mold). There is no need to mess around with fleece, cheesecloth, or any other material when making a mold, especially on the floorpan. Just lay down mat. If possible, do multiple layers all at once. There is no need to do...

    Fibreglass your doors

If you run a 3-way component set sealed, it is important to separate the midbass from the midrange. Just like it's not a good idea to run a 12" and 8" sub sharing sealed arispace, the same is tru for component speakers. For 2-way comps and non-sealed pods, there is no need to separate the...

Using Box Carpet as Glassing Fabric?

"Box carpet" is also called "trunk liner" and is a great material to use. I know the guys on the Yahoo group "glassman's custom forum" use it almost exclusively. If it stretches well and is not cotton, go for it - you should do fine. ~HH

is a watt just a watt?

Doug - you are confusing watts with actual power. Yes, your JL puts out 1100 watts. All that means is that you will get the 1000 watts you paid for without harmful distortion and clipping. And the JBL 1200.1 has been tested to put out nearly 1400 watts (1372, I believe). Which means you'll...

    look at this kids system

Hahaha - $100k in "the bank" will net you about $100 a month in interest. Woo-frigging hoo. Gotta do something better than "the bank" and "interest" if you want your money to make money. And NO WAY would I buy ANY kind of SUV with a lot of dough. Navigator, Escalade - blah - yuppie crap...

is a watt just a watt?

This is one of the most ignorant statements I've heard in a long time - the sentence itself is contradictory. A watt is a watt. A watt is not beer, where one is different from another. A watt is a unit of measurement. Using this guy's logic, a JL amp that is 12" long is gonna be bigger than...

    Tool Selection?

For routers, Bosch is held in high regard. I'm fairly pleased with the DeWalt drills I own (one cordless, had it for 5 years or more, and one corded that gets beat to shit every day at work). Excellent for the price. Of course, if you want REAL stuff, grab some Hilti equipment. They don't...

Went to a local comp today...

****, man - you shoulda emailed me. I'd have loved to meet up! Where was this comp? And when's the next one? BTW - there's a guy on one of my Mazda boards who pulled a 147.2 with a single Brahma 10 and 1100 watts, in some sort of transmission-line enclosure. ~HH

    Having your stuff stolen

Good of you to decide against fraud. It's not worth it anyway. So - back to topic, I guess. Just call your insurance company, and ask them about coverage for your audio system. Since you are planning on re-doing it soon, make sure to keep receipts for EVERYTHING, down to the wiring. And...

    Having your stuff stolen

Trust me - they do NOT "make" money of premiums. Go talk to anyone who knows the deal with insurance companies. But don't mistake this for love of them - I hate them with a passion. And consider this - I have an "average" driving record. A few tickets, and accident or two - same with my...

    Having your stuff stolen

This is all "chicken and egg" bullshit - do people scam insurance because they charge so much, or do they charge so much because people scam? Who cares? Fact is, VERY few insurance companies make money on premiums. If insurance companies had to take all the money they collect, and lock it in...

    my system

What is the point of a post like this? I see them all the time over here.... If it sounds good to YOU then that is ALL that matters. Don't expect anyone here to wax your carrot for ya' unless you have something outrageous or extraordinary. ~HH
