I think what we are looking for is a HU that looks like a car stereo, not like a TV set, but can play burned DVDs containing MP3s. That is not common, but it appears ngsm13 points us in the right direction with JVC's giga mp3 feature, which they offer even in some base models...

If I understand the OP correctly, he wants a HU that can read burned DVDs - not just burned CDs. I believe that's quite a different kettle of fish. Unfortunately I don't have a solution to this problem, but since I am interested in the answer, I thought it might be worth pointing this out.
