So do you think a Sound Control 6SX added pre-amp would help with the SQ?

Yea I know the SQ of my HU is not up to par by any standards (and is the root of the issue). I unfortunately have become accustomed to the convenience of the GPS/iPod/BlueTooth/Navigation the HU provides. So Im looking for a compromise for now. Seems the 6SX might be it.

Hmm not really, his post addressed exactly what I asked. I never intended this tread to be a debate about the pro's/con's of high voltage HU -vs- low voltage. I just ended up with the latter in my truck (which is not my preference) and wanted to address it (with out buying a new HU for +$800)...

To provide a clearer picture my amp is a Alpine MRV-F345 75 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (85 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms) 300 watts RMS x 1 (channels 3/4) + 75 watts RMS x 1 (channels 1/2) in bridged mode Amp Link allows single cable connection for signal and control with compatible Alpine receivers...

The 6SX seems to be adequate but Im not sure how to adjust the x-overs even after reading the owners manual. The DQX is perfect but too pricey.

Thanks, you hit the nail on the head. This was the kind of advice I was looking for. I agree 100% about the bells and whistles, but I just cant spend any coin on a new HU right now. The audio control EQ's seems to be a better alternative but I would have to come across a good used one at a good...

All the research I've ever read says a high volt pre-out will allow higher volume with less distortion. Its also been my experience when listening to different head units.

long story short, I totaled my favorite car (with a KDCX993) and I’ve never had a head-unit with lower than 4volts pre-out. Now I have a 4runner with a AVIC-U310BT installed. It’s a bare bones solution to gps/ipod/navigation and I really don’t have the cash for a similar high-end (+4volt)...
