could it be b/c he has a stock head unit with a hi-low converter which has it's own gains?

The problem is, I need to turn the gains up all the way to get some decent amount of bass. it is a sony xm-1s running at 500watts @ 2ohms. The weird thing is, when I hook this amp up to my buddies car it powers his sub amazingly, with the gain only about half way up! We both have 4 gauge...

I just hooked up my sony xm-1s amp running at 500w at 2ohms to my two 10" 400w audiobahn subs in a sealed box. The output doesn't seem as loud as I expected compared to the audiobahn 300w amp i had in there. The gain on the sony has to be turned up very close to max input sens. and the bass...
