So does anyone have a good site for getting a good automotive 5 volt power supply with around 500 mA of output? I'm pretty much resigned to adding power to make the thing spin.

I checked with LaCie and the Mobile drives they offer need 500mA of power. From the manual, the Kenwood X891 is stated to supply that level of power and the Pioneer P690UB also states that it supplies 500mA. So theoretically, both of these heads should work fine with the LaCie mobile hard drive...

Well, given everything I've found out about the USB capabilities of these decks, the Eclipse is out and I'm down to the Kenwood X891 and the Pioneer P690UB. Still a little work to do though.

You actually can replace the battery in an ipod. I just did this a few months ago as my battery was lasting only a few hours. Now I get 8-12 hours depending upon what I'm doing. Still, I'd rather not use the ipod for the car.

I just talked to Eclipse and the CD5100 cannot support anything more than a flash drive. So as far as the units I've been looking at (Kenwood X891, Pioneer P690UB, and Eclipse CD5100), I can eliminate the 5100.

So something like the P690UB maybe?

Speaking of power, I checked on the Kenwood X891 and while they don't specify the power per unit, they have a usb support page that specifies that the power must be 500mA or less. Again, the highest unit I saw specified on that page was the X890 so who knows if they've upped this power. The...

I definitely had taken a look at the aplines but it looked like the eclipse or exelon had more sq features...although the eclipse does appear to have the least favorable ipod hookup.
