A fairly quick and easy test is to turn on all the loads (headlamps, brights, windshield washers A/C etc.) in the vehicle with it running and measure voltage at the battery. You should see 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

If you're looking at the 745 stay away from an 02, the 03 is better but 04 and beyond are much less problematic (after it became a 750)
