New ride, new thump.

Hey all…..
So, I recently got a new to me work truck, a 2017 gmc sierra 1500 4 door, and I’m interested in trying something new as far as brands go. I’ve been into car audio since ‘93. I used to compete in IASCA sanctioned events from ‘94-‘97 and have ALWAYS had a system in all of my rides. I started out with a Denon head unit, Soundstream amp, and MTX separates and subs. After that I had some Pyle 15’s and a Lanzar amp. Then I got introduced to Rockford Fosgate. Ever since then I’ve used RF pretty much exclusively….. except for some Infinity KAPPA mids/highs a couple of times and some JL 12’s in my last work truck. Always used Power series amps and either Punch or Power subs. I feel like it’s time for change. I’ve got a Taramps TS 800x4 amp that I plan to use for my mids n highs but I’d like some recommendations on some 6.5’s for the front of my truck. I’ve also got a pair of Sundown Classic 10’s that I may or may not use…..box size being an issue…..and would like some thoughts on this as well as a dedicated sub amp. What are you youngsters using these days? lol Thank you in advance.

Hey Mixmini!

It's great to see someone with a deep history in car audio looking to try something new! Given your background and the equipment you already have, let's dive into your questions about the 6.5" speakers for the front of your GMC Sierra and your subwoofer setup.

### 6.5" Speaker Recommendations

Since you're moving away from Rockford Fosgate, here are a few brands and models that are highly regarded in the car audio community:

1. **Focal** - The Focal Access line (like the AC 6.5) offers excellent clarity and detail, making them a great choice for mids and highs.

2. **Morel** - The Morel Maximo 6.5 speakers are known for their exceptional sound quality and build, delivering rich mid-bass and clear highs.

3. **Hertz** - The Hertz DCX 165 is a well-balanced speaker that provides great performance for both music and spoken word.

4. **Polk Audio** - The DB652 speakers are marine-rated, which is a great feature for durability, and they offer a solid sound stage.

5. **Kicker** - The Kicker KS series is also a good option, providing a punchy sound that can work well in a truck environment.

### Subwoofer Setup

Regarding your Sundown Classic 10’s, they can definitely work, but the box size is critical. Sundown typically recommends specific enclosure sizes for optimal performance. If you decide to use them, make sure to adhere to those specifications for sealed or ported boxes, depending on your preference for sound.

For a dedicated sub amp, consider these options:

1. **Sundown Audio** - The Sundown SAE series amplifiers are a perfect match for their subs, providing clean power and reliability.

2. **Rockford Fosgate** - Even though you're looking for a change, their Punch series amps are still solid performers and have a good reputation for delivering the power you need.

3. **JL Audio** - The JL Audio JX series amps are well-regarded and provide excellent performance and reliability.

4. **Alpine** - The Alpine MRV series offers great power and performance, especially if you want something compact.

### Additional Thoughts

When considering your setup, keep in mind the overall balance between your mids/highs and subs. Make sure to match the power ratings of your amp with your speakers/subs to avoid any damage.

Also, don't forget about proper installation and tuning, as these can significantly impact your sound quality. If you're not comfortable with the installation, consider seeking help from a professional.

I'm sure others in the community have their preferences and experiences too, so feel free to ask for additional opinions or suggestions! Any other members want to chime in?

If not running active I would probably recommend components from morel like the sensus series or the hybrid series
Or something from dynaudio like the esotan series or the esotec series

Thank you. I’ve actually been looking seriously and Focal and Hertz. I’ve always wanted to try both, as well as Audio Frog and Morel. I’m not 100% locked onto using the Taramps amp or the Sundown subs. They’re just some things that I happen to have available. I’ve got my son and daughter both into car audio and they’re components that I purchased for their vehicles but didn’t end up using. My son has currently has all RF in his KIA Stinger and my daughter currently has Alpine, Kicker and Focal Auditor in her Jetta. Good kids. 😎

I’ve never heard any dynaudio. Being from such a heavily populated and technologically advanced state like Maine, you’d think I’d have done n seen it all……lol
