No. They can test for brain function with an EEG fairly easily.

They had to coin the separate terms because of cases of brain death while the body was kept alive artificially (like those “pull the plug” ones), and cases where the brain was alive but the only way the body could be kept alive was artificially (like the iron lung polio folks).

Because the ancients didn't realize it wasn't as valuable or rare as many other resources.
It was shiny and stayed shiny, and was relatively rare, so they thought it was THE shit.

They didn't know the truth about that, yet we turn to them for proof of god/higher powers/souls/astral planes/etc.
