Sub amp question

I recently put an about six-year old pioneer 200W amp and 10" sub in the trunk of my 08 Civic. If I open the trunk and listen to the sub while standing behind the trunk the bass sounds good. However, it is weak inside the car. You really need to turn the system up to hear it. I've got the gain on the amp all the way up and the subwoofer setting on the HU maxed out. The amp is bridged. Should I unbridge the amp or just get a new amp? The speakers wires look old. Would new wires from amp to sub help? If so, what gauge. All connections seems to be ok.
