Active crossovers are/were designed for systems utilizing multiple amplifiers and/or when the active crossover may be of better design and\or function than the active analog crossover that is in-built to some amplifiers, the 3-way active crossover could be used to split the frequencies to 3 different amplifiers, 1 for the tweeters, 1 for the mids and 1 for the subs. Some of us (like me) use a 5 or 6-channel amplifier to run active and just use the active analog crossover to split highpass from bandpass and lowpass, drive the tweeters with the 1st two channels, mids with 2nd pair of channels and subs with channel 5. A six channel amplifier would allow you to run a 4-way active system with tweeters, midrange, woofers and subwoofers. There is more than one way to skin a cat..
