What I mean by my walmart example is that shops need to start dealing in higher volume sales rather than relying on doing a few big $$$ installs a year and making 200% profit on certain items to help keep them afloat. If they can move merchandise quicker by pricing their stuff competitively, that's less overhead for them and more sales, which ='s more $$. Most shops I know of charge WAY WAY too much for something that can be had at a significantly less price somewhere online. I would gladly pay $50-75 more for an amp from a B&M store than online simply because of the convenience and the comfort of knowing that I have a manufacturer's warranty. But $200-400 more than internet prices? I'll take the risk and purchase online. Simply put, shops overhcharge for the products they sell. Most shops I see nowadays are making a large portion of their profits by selling such things as alarms, remote starts, and installation of products purchased outside the store. This is the bread and butter of their business now and will probably be that way for a long time. Another aspect is custom enclosures, fiberglass work, etc., but that is such a small portion of potential business compared to the average joe looking to just buy equipment and install it themselves. Sure, you don't get the same service as a B&M shop when dealing with an online retailer, but with today's economy shops should be lucky to have any business at all over the internet stores.
