Because compared to some jazz, some rock and most classical music, synthesized beats and a few chords hold no water. Catchy doesn't make a song good to me. Songs that require a wide range of talents, and have a variety of sounds and instruments are what make good music to me. Have you ever listened to "Starship Trooper" by Yes? That song has such a huge range of sounds and subtleties, and every member of the band gets his turn to shine. Everything I've heard from Coldplay just sounds so boring, slow and same-ish. And yes, I know that's awfully subjective, but it's not hard to tell that there's little talent in most pop music out there nowadays. Listen to Dave Matthews' falsetto babblings and Coldplay's falsetto babblings. Sound just alike to me I will say, though, that there are a few DMB songs that gripped me.
