There's a plastic plunger that makes contact with the pedal when you press it down. It has a ratcheting mechanism to hold it in place, so just slide it down so the pedal can't bounce against it and trigger your brake lights.Or on some cars it's the opposite and makes contact until you press down the brake pedal, then you'd want to move it closer to the pedal so it doesn't lose contact from bouncing.</blockquote>
