If your still interested in the railroad heres the skivvy. Im in train service which is conductors and engineers. We actually ride the trains. So yes you travel but only to a certain destination where they put you up in a hotel for your rest and then you come home. We are only allowed to work 12 hrs before we have to have rest kinda like a truck driver. I am usually on the road for a bout 36 hrs before I come home and then Im off for a couple of days. As far as your sales venture. A lot of guys work on the railroad and moonlight doing something they enjoy. Around here a lot of people farm but I know others who own welding shops, mechanic shops, they own rental properties ect. When your first starting your own business the money you make railroading keeps it afloat. After that you just make hella money or not work as much railroading. Its not very vigorous work its like a desk job only while moving. Sometimes there is a lot of walking. The hardest part is working all hours. Going to work at 7 p.m. and getting to the motel at 7 a.m. really sucks. And the railroad doesnt recognize holidays. So you might have to work christmas. If your still interested go to http://www.up.com and look under jobs they will have a list of current job openings across the western half of the united states. 1/3 of the railroads work force is retiring in the next 10 yrs so theyre looking.
