If this is going in a dorm room or bedroom, and you feel comfortable building an enclosure, here is my suggestion for a cheap and reliable sub that will do the job for you: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-480&ctab=2#Tabs With this amp: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-784 Make the box 1.25 cu. ft. and tune it to 26 hz to get the most from the 70 watts from the amp. I have built this same box for my nephew and it sounds really good in his bedroom. Is it the loudest or cleanest? No, but for $75 plus materials it sounds awesome. Use the receiver that flipx suggested and maybe a set of the Insignia bookshelf speakers that Best Buy puts on sale about every month and you got a decent budget system. And if you want to get crazy there are all kinds of mods out there for the Insignia's.
