Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast." The defining difference between Christianity and the other religions is the belief that man cannot save himself. The only way man can be saved is by God's grace. Through faith in Christ, and repentance, man is saved by God grace. John 14:6 is another good verse, it shows that Jesus is the only way to God. Romans 10:9-10 "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Anyone who believes in their heart that Christ is Lord, puts their faith and trust in the Lord, and confess it with their lips shall be saved. However, another interesting verse is James 2:19 "You believe in one God? Good! Even the demons in hell believe this- and shudder. There is a difference between a belief in God in your mind and a believe in God in your heart. There is an illustration called "16 inches". 16 inches is the average distance from your head to your heart. It is considered the distance of eternity, those that only believe in God in their mind, will be like the demons in hell, but those that believe in their heart have true belief. When one truly believes in God (in their heart) and has true faith in Jesus Christ, he shall be saved by the grace of God. Grace is what covers our sin, that is why Jesus died on the cross, he died for our sins; those that believe in Him and live by His word, shall be saved by God's grace, which covers all of our sin. I guess in short summary, being saved is being crucified in Christ, you no longer live but Christ lives in you (the Holy Spirit).
