Just throwing my $0.02 out but, I had a similar problem, was a older Legacy Gold 800w amp. For some reason my right channel, which was on my left side (from driving position,) would cut out and sound all grumbled at my HU's turn on volume (10 of 39) but when it turned up to 17-25(full tilt for me at the time) she's crystal clear and smooth. It'd only had gain set at 1/3 (just below half anyway) and the subs I had at the time pounded (to me), but in my estimation these subs were only seeing 100w rms @2 ohm (which this amp wasn't old enough to be stable at so she'd get baby butt warm and never go into protect.) I'd make a turn or be in a curve on the e-way and the channel would start cuttin again. Sounding exactly the same as before only now it's cuttin in/out faster from vibration. I don't use this amp anymore but it definitely was an odd problem. Friend who's repaired amps, xbox360s, ps3s, wiis, etc. took a look at it and saw a mosfet was blown.
