As far as the hollow sound, to me they seem so have a "limited" response when they are new. My new 3512 actually sounded like *** for the first....3 days or so. Same box, same amps and it had no low(45ish on down) end response. After the 3 days I started burping it for 10sec or so about 20 times through out the day and it "loosened up" a lot. It can literally flex my entire truck with 35hz tones.(current box is tuned to 44hzish and is 2 cuft) Out of all of the DD's that I have tried, I have only had/noticed this twice. With this 3500 and a 1508, all the others seemed ready out of the box. Now, power wise your 1515 should do 1k clean just fine as I have sent that daily to a 1508 with out issue. For tuning, stick to the 16" of port and using a tad more will help the low end. You can tune as low as you like but do seem to like the 36-45 range. Other than that, I do not have experience with the 1515.
