That's the way that I do it, then I'll usually put in the other front, then the port, then the side thatway I can paint the port, then i'll put the top on it. I don't know why you'd "pre-assemble" it without gluing, you are just weakening the wood by doing that. Let alone you've already sanded, so you'll have to sand it again.
