Message: <blockquote data-quote="helotaxi" data-source="post: 2524697" data-attributes="member: 550915"><p>MDF is meant to be cut, unlike plywood which is used in its intended purpose as a full sheet (decking).  The extra 1" in each direction covers the saw kerf of several cuts and leaves a full 4'x8' of usable wood.  Also cabinet makes will not leave an original milled edge on any piece they use (the edges get f-ed up in transit) so they need something to cut off and still have a 4x8 sheet.  Think of it as packaging, like the first and last of TP on the roll, useless but holds the rest of the roll together.  As far as a 2x4 goes, I used to know the actual reason that they were undersized from nominal, it was legit.</p></blockquote><p></p>
