Please follow this guideline for effective, efficient, and safe driving.
Maintain Lane discipline. I cannot stress this enough!!! Lane discipline involves moving over when you are in the fast lane and someone is behind you trying to pass. Move over!!!! Fast driving does not equal aggressive driving per se.
Please do not sit in the left lane and "patrol" other peoples driving habits. That's what police are for. Sitting in the left lane is why people become aggressive while driving. Think about it. The slower driver thinks the guy behind him is being unsafe for tailgating. The guy behind the slower driver thinks he is an ass for not allowing him to pass. Both drivers become irratated with the other's driving. This also leads to unsafe driving because the faster driver is usually forced to pass on the right into even slower traffic. This is one of the main causes of the "weaving effect" The driver that wants to maintain a speed is forced to jump through traffic endangering multiple people. In fact, this is why most states have "slower traffic keep right" laws. Unfortunately, because they are more difficult to spot and don't make the state as much money, they are rarely enforced (I have heard this from cops).
I notice that older people and "passive drivers" tend to stay in the left lanes (who IMO are just as dangerous as aggressive drivers due to their lack of understanding of whats happening around them). My experience is that these drivers like to have longer than necessary distances between them and the next car. When they stay in the fast lane all the cars already in front of them pull away giving them the sense that they are maintaining a safe distance. Meanwhile, people in the back will not maintain a safe distance when traffic starts piling up behind them.
If you want to go 80 in a 65 and they guy behind you wants to 85 just move over. You can move back to the left lane as soon as he/she passes you. Don't think that because you are going fast doesn't mean somebody else won't go faster. (besides, these people are the best radar detector you can have; just fall back 50 yards and go same speed)
For people that will try to use the argument that they are within their right to stay in the fast lane so long as they don't speed may be technically correct. But who are you to decide what is safest for every other driver on the road or that you know whats best for everybody else. I also don't buy into the argument that you only save x amount of minutes at this speed vs. the speed limit. Most people don't speed on the freeway to save time, most of us do it because the speed we drive is what we feel comfortable at while being safe with the conditions present. Some people feel comfortable at 65, 70, 75, 80 (this example uses 65-mph speed limit). If you feel comfortable at 75 and the guy behind you feels comfortable at 80, please move over.
