I think perhaps both you and your friend are confusing Arabs with Muslims...actually persians and egyptians aren't even Arabs... Hmm...1000 years before America was even discovered...Islam came after that. And within a few years after Islam most slaves owned in the Islamic areas were set free, by will of his owner. Rich Islamic men would go and buy slaves from people, just to set them free. The few that still kept slaves under Islam followed Islams teachings about slavery. It DOES NOT say that its perfectly fine to have slaves, but it says if you have a slave, you must treat him as you treat yourself. He eats what you eat, he sleeps where you sleep, he dresses how you dress, etc. Slaves under Islam (the few that there were) were not slaves in the same sense you envision slavery as it went down in America. When it came to free men becoming slaves, it ALWAYS was a much better situation than they were in before they did. Slaves actually filled more of a consumer role than a means of production role under Islam. Maybe your friend is exaggerating, maybe your friend did in fact see those things happen, but if that's true then those people obviously weren't living by the Quran, just like 99% of christians don't even live close to by the bible, only there are a LOT more Muslims who do (live by the Quran). Do you know why we pray five times a day? To keep God on our minds, 24/7. It truly stops you from doing wrong, when you begin to do it whole heartedly (which most Muslims do, but I'm sure muslims who are recently accepting Islam and God don't exactly start out in the full spirit that those who are raised into it do). Bismillah irahman irahim. http://wahiduddin.net/words/bismillah.htm ^Maybe an interesting read for some of you, not too long
