The reason I don't want to do it myself is (1) I've never done it before, (2) I want someone to go to in the event something wrong happens, (3) and I don't want to spend the time on it. I'd rather drop it off and pick it up in two days, end of story. I went to one place today and he quoted me $600 for everything. Labor only, I have everything including wires, RCA cables, battery terminals, distribution block, head unit kit (from Crutchfield), and even extension cable for the USB cable. He shouldn't need anything. We didn't get into details, but he did say that he'd fiberglass the inside of the box for weatherproofing. I didn't ask for anything very trick. I asked for a sealed enclosure, amp rack, all carpeted and as stealth as possible. He said he'd route the iPod and USB cables into the glove box or arm rest, whatever. $600 didn't sound that expensive to me. I was expecting over $1k. Before I agree to go to him, I will want to see some real installs of his.
