It is estimated that 60 to 70 percent of all adults in America today have at least smoked marijuana once in there lifetime. Marijuana is, by far, the world’s most commonly used illicit drug. Now before I delve into the subject of legalizing marijuana I would first like to give a brief history over the drug known as marijuana. Marijuana was first recorded in 6000 B.C and was being used as a food in china. In 4000 B.C the plant was being used in textile factories. (Hemp is one of the strongest and softest materials used as fabrics. It is known for being as soft as cotton but much stronger.) In 2727 B.C First recorded use of cannabis as medicine in Chinese pharmacopoeia. In every part of the world humankind has used cannabis for a wide variety of health problems. In the 12th Century Cannabis is introduced in Egypt during the reign of the Ayyubid dynasty on the occasion of the flooding of Egypt by mystic devotees coming from Syria. In 1840 in America, medicinal preparations with a Cannabis base are available. Hashish available in Persian pharmacies. 1936 Propaganda film "Reefer Madness" made to scare American youth away from using Cannabis. 1937 Cannabis made federally illegal in the U.S. with the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act. June 2003 Canada is first country in the world to offer medical marijuana to its patients. Marijuana is now legal in California, and Oregon, and is becoming more and more popular and decriminalized in the United States. So im wondering why this plant hasn’t became legal. Marijuana is literally safer then water. It is actually impossible to overdose on this drug where drinking too much water can cause your body function improperly and can cause your kidney to shut down. Marijuana is associated with many myths that cause this harmless plant to have a harmful reputation. Myths such as, marijuana causing permanent mental illness, and marijuana is highly addictive, marijuana has no medicinal value. All of these have been proven to be untrue. Given all this information I will now list the reasons why I believe that marijuana should be legalized. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of marijuana. Marijuana is used by over 25 million people annually the fact that it is illegal doesn’t curb people for there love of this plant. Marijuana is the cause of 47.5% of all the people in jail. We are paying for this. Personally I don’t want to be paying for the imprisonment of people that in my opinion aren’t necessarily criminals. Legalized marijuana would reduce the flow of money from the American economy to international gangs. Marijuana's illegality makes foreign growing and smuggling to the United States extremely profitable, sending billions of dollars overseas profiting these smugglers. Marijuana's legalization would simplify the development of hemp as a valuable and diverse agricultural crop in the United States, including its development as a new bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions. As this country is searching for a answer to end there dependency on oil, we have an answer right in front of us. The only reason this isn’t currently being researched further is because of the lack of this plant because of its legality. Marijuana is not a lethal drug and is safer than alcohol. It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans. Marijuana is not addictive, and it is unfair and unjust to treat marijuana users any differently then someone who drinks or smokes.
