Trust me - they do NOT "make" money of premiums. Go talk to anyone who knows the deal with insurance companies. But don't mistake this for love of them - I hate them with a passion. And consider this - I have an "average" driving record. A few tickets, and accident or two - same with my wife. Nothing in the past several years, and there's not much on my insurance record anymore (they go back 40 months to determine rates). And I'm almost 30, she's nearly 27, so age plays no role. The cost for insuring our vehicles (1998 Jeep Cheorkee, and 2002 Mazda Protege): $4000 a year. Yes, that's right - a four and three zeros. My rates just went up over $400 this past term alone - completely negated the 10% defensive driving course discount here in NY. They claim "yes, all our New York rates increased." Thanks a lot. We are second only to New Jersey in cost of insurance, and many comapines have stopped doing business in NY and NJ altogether - the reason? FRAUD. It has run rampant and unchecked, and companies cannot make a profit anyore. Don't think I'm on the side of insurance companies - but if people weren't such scumbags, we'd all do a lot better. And I can't have too much sympathy for other people's rate increases, when it costs me almost $11 a DAY just to INSURE my cars. The PAYMENTS on BOTH cars $500 a month, and I pay almost $350/month to insure them. Don't talk to me about skyrocketing rates. ~HH
