Just going to throw my .02 into this and step away.... DidUHearThat is correct about the .223 round. I researched this heavily in 1999 for a large local law enforcement department. Though I would leave the AR-15 to someone with knowledge of guns and the willingness to train with that weapon. It can be complicated for the average user in a 'point and shoot' scenario. Now, for the OP. Go buy a Mossberg 12 guage with an 18" barrel. This is a dependable firearm with a decent price and plenty of accessories available to tailor the weapon for hunting, etc. Remember the barrel must remain at 18" and the length of the weapon must be no less than 26". Consider using one of the larger birdshot shells in your home. A few posts back someone mentioned the 12 gauge would only be their choice if it were sawed off. First, you don't want to go there. It will not be a smart choice in the long run, unless you have the appropriate ATF stamp. Second, the dispersion characteristics between an 18" barrel and a shortened barrel at distances covered in a normal home will not be noticeable. The theory that a sawed off shotgun will funnel out to a huge wall of death and kill everything in its path is a misnomer. The only viable reason would be a slight ease in movement around the premises.
