You're missing the point. It doesnt matter what gets a person motivated, even if its being selfish. As long as that motivational factor is there, that button can be pushed. Sure the middle east situation is a problem, but our gas prices are what effects us here & now. So, we can use that as the motivation. So long as the end result is the same. Who cares what our reason is, I promise the people of the middle east wont care If you're just one person who's a customer for oil, its not a problem. However there are at least 150 million people that need at the very least 15 gallons of fuel a week (very conservative #s btw). Sure they'll hand down a tax break, knowing you'll spend X amount more in the long run in fuel. Its just an investment on their part, all people look at is "ohh look, its a tax break. lets buy it!" but dont consider how much the fuel is going to be. Dumb really, but its working & in great #'s. So the public is doing exactly as the government wants. All it takes is a bit of common sense to put 2 and 2 together and see the picture. My parents ended up falling into this category, they got shafted on taxes this year so they went out and got a new SUV for tax purposes. Yeah its nice, but its not really necessary.
