Alrighty, as I'm sure none of you know... I'm an aspiring audiophile and have been for a long, long time. Since I'm dumb I decided I'd spend almost all of the $ I made at work this summer on gear so that I could have a system like I've always wanted. The plans are still to build a pair of book shelf monitors, a powered sub, and there will be a turntable in the mix some time, it would be a shame to not take advantage of my parents crazy LP collection! My goal was simple, research, and buy something that will last me pretty much forever. My first stereo consisted of a Pioneer reciever, matching 6 disk changer, an old Akai cassette deck, one of the first Sony MD recorders, and my sweet RE30 Cirwin Vega's. That lasted me 15yrs, so I am aiming for about 25 with this stuff (if I can aviod the temptations!) So here are my components in detail in the order I recieved them. First off is a Parasound Halo P3 preamp. Made is 2001. Aside from being quite pretty, it has all of the pieces I was looking for, fully balanced XLR connections, output loop for EQ's and such, and a built in phono stage. Next up is an Arcam Alpha 8se CD player. Made in 1998. From the numerous reviews I have read it was one of the better CD stages you could buy. Plus, I can upgrade it to their newer player because the DAC is removable (see pic below). I think the newer DAC is like $300 though. This is a solid state high bias class A/B design and acording to the manual one of the first amps to use "insulated gate bi-polar transistors" as the power devices in the output stage. Made in 1992, what I found interesting is that Forte was a division of Threshold audio and there were several well known engineers working on their designs.
