I did a comparitive test among mp3's encoded at 128, 160, 192, 256, 320 and a wav file. I could generally tell the difference between 128 and 160 and the rest. 192-320 and the wave sounded very similar, however, and I couldn't consistently pick out any of them. This was done on some fairly decent audio equipment, as well. With all the extra noise in the car environment I would think you'd be especially hard pressed to notice the difference in anything over 192k.
