A dipole (in audio terms) is when you load a single baffle with drivers, letting the front and back wave mix with each other. It's not quite free air becuase of the resonances involved, and involves a 6dB loss right off the bat because of losses, and I'm not exactly sure how it works. It's named that way because of the response pattern (a figure eight, perpendicular to the plane of the drivers)
