clipping question...

Alright, I have an Alpine Hu (9507) and I have a PG ti500.4 amp. My system is running at 13.8 volts and drops to 13.6 volts I'm testing the amp.

Alright, the amp is rated at:

18x4 wrms @ 4ohm running at 12.5vdc

75x4 wrms @ 4ohm running at 14.4vdc

I used an oscilloscope and a DMM. When I was tuning the amp I couldn't get it to go higher than 25wrms without clipping. I use a multi freq test tone @ 0db to test the amp. I used a multi freq test tone because when I just used a 1k test tone when I played music it'd clip.

This amp is very well rated and was recommended by multiple non-dealer people. The retail on this amp is about 1000. However, I got it for 400$. Anyways, Is this normal for an amp rated at this to be clipping in these conditions? Would upgrading my alt+battery fix this problem?

Alright, what I did was I turned the HU down from 30 to 27... exactly 75% of full on the HU... turned off the processing on the HU. Readjusted the amp with the oscilloscope and DMM... more the oscilloscope (it's more accurate for finding volts). Anyways, it appears that's it's operating closer to 80wrms @ 4ohm without clipping. I'm not sure if it's the eq on the alpine but it made a huge difference in clipping when I disabled it and turned down the HU slightly... The only thing I'm worried about is someone messing with it when I'm not around. I was actually really supprised when I plugged the speakers back in. The system was about twice as loud. Has anyone had simular experiences with alpine HU's?

i agree with jmac...

25 is the stopping point on my alpine, whether i amping the speakers or not...

after that, the sound just gets cruddy..

the internal crossovers work great though..hehe

Yah, actually it seems to start clipping around 22-23 on the incubus cd I have when the eq is on... I have the bass setup to +4 and treble to +2 on the eq, no mids, hella *****. Anyways, I'm thinking about getting a eclipse next summer would I still have this problem after I upgrade to that?
