Cheap Car w/ Good Gas Mileage

Next year my girlfriend is going to college and she currently does not have a vehicle which could survive a 300 miles round trip(1946 Willy Jeep is not gonna cut it). I am trying to see if I can find her a car that gets at least 30mpg, is durable enough to survice 120+ degree weather in the summer, and is less than 4 grand. Something that has cheap insurance rates would also be a plus even though I pay more in 6 months than she does in 2 years. Any suggestions?

oh ********! lol mine gets bout 12 mpg right now (cuz of the winter). But then again it is a 4 wheel drive truck... Still i doubt there is a truck out there with 30 mpg

Any Toyota Tercel. I have a 1993 and it gets 38mpg when its warm and Toyotas always stay together my old trunk has 270,000 miles on it and it still runs every time you turn the key. If you dont believe me I'll get some pics.

im getting 14 mpg highway with my 2000 impala, been trying to convince my parents that their is something wrong with the **** thing. its still under warrenty, too. ****ing ******** gas is getting expensive.
