I'd say it is fairly possible that they were not. The new plugs advertise a 10 year span, and even the manufacturers are going that route. Look at the current oil change intervals on the new cars. 8,000 for an oil change is not unheard of in the manufacturer specs. Shoot, my '94 Honda VFR (motorcycle) was recommended for 8K miles back in '94!! I use synthetic and change at 3-4K miles. I went to 8K once, and begged her forgiveness and promised I'd NEVER do that again. Even with synthetic, the oil looked like arse. (I do 10K or more a year on the bikes.) So the manufacturers are actually pushing people to these extended maintenance schedules (which actually helps their desire to wear out the car faster). People don't want to change plugs every few years when they're running an $8-10 plug (times 4, 6, or even 8). My Bronco runs GREAT on standard copper core ($2) plugs, so replacing every few years is a no brainer and cheap! LOL As for why did he reinstall the engine and THEN do the rest of the work? Ppphhhtt, who knows?? Maybe a spout of temporary insanity? :-) I like having things right there in my face to work on them. Of course, my fenders come to my arm pits, so anything in the engine bay is a bother. The underside though - that is GREAT. I sit upright to do work under there. hehehehe
