Please escuse me then if I question the results of your testing, as only sheer mis-use and clipping would have caused the the problems you are describing; which at best sound a bit far fetched. The Voice coil simply will not sever and come through the cone of a woofer-especially a woofer with an aluminum cone. The physical design and magnetic fields generated around the voice coil make this improbable as does the linear travel of the voice coil. If the coil goes beyond its peak travel, its windings will begin to unwind (decompress) which typically results in a woofer's loss of motion (travel) all together. This is something that happens internally, and again is generally ony achieved by abuse, clipping, or other mis-use. Now, if for a brief moment linear excursion goes beyond its peak and the woofers spider is severedfrom the cone, this can also produce cone detatchment from the spider- thus is also called over excursion, in which case the voice coil assembly would need replacement as well as the spider, and in some cases the cone. In a situation such as this, when the spider detaches( or over excursion occurs) the woofer cone moves freely for a moment which can cause cone distortion (damage), however, this is rare with proper installation and powering, such events will only occur again, by misuse. As for the Infinity's falling short of the MA's, I would also like to know how you came to this conclusion. I ploted out the T/S Parameters of each speaker in its reccomended sealed enclosure and as you can see in the graph below, the Infinity Perfect- considerably out does the MA P12il. If the Image does not load go to this link: http://www.geocities.com/thunderbird302/WinISD.html?1009921755420 Infinity Perfect 12.1- Charted in Red MA Audio P12il- Charted in Yellow A near 10db difference between the two. T/S parameters dont lie, clearly they prove the Perfect 12.1 is the better of the two in this situation. Take it easy, -zane [ 01-01-2002: Message edited by: zane ]
