You will always find people who have had bad luck with a particular brand, but I think Eclipse makes **** solid decks. Anyway, the alpine will have more features, but I think eclipse makes a better sounding deck. Eclipse's pre outs are excellent as well. If you want/need mp3 then you could go with the eclipse 3403 or 3413(or buy a clarion 835mp which is very nice). Again, alpine wins on features. Eclipse wins on SQ. IT all depends on what matters most to you. Good luck with whatever you buy.
Eclipse decks go bad after a year? Where have you heard that? I ran eclipse decks for 9 years until just recently(tired of waiting for the new eclipse so had the shop put in a clarion 835mp...very nice deck btw...but I will probably get the eclipse 8053 when it comes out). I have NEVER needed an eclipse deck repaired. They did have some weird voltage/skipping issues with some decks years ago(but that was fixed 3 years ago). My best friend went from eclipse to alpine(took him about 2 seconds to regret that decision), and his 1st alpine died after 6 months or so, and his 2nd one has needed to be repaired for over a year. There is also a clarion/alpine dealer 2 hours from here. The owner told the local shop owners that he had major reliability issues with the alpines(and he said the clarion stuff sounded better anyway).
