I was at wal mart picking up a last minute gift for a gift exchange I was attending when I came across an entire subwoofer system for $35 out the door. I couldn't believe it came with a sub, amp and carpeted box all for less than $40, so I of course shamefully grabbed it and proceeded to the checkout counter with my head down. I installed it in the Walmart parking lot with a $1.24 extension cord in place of speaker wire. For $35 you get a 10" stamped metal driver mounted in a sealed and carpeted MDF box. The box seems to be of decent construction quality. You get a "300 watt" amp, rated at only 70W rms @ 4 ohm CEA. It's a very tiny amp, and the fact it takes RCA input, high level input, and its solid aluminum construction makes it a kinda cool amp for benchtop testing purposes. Only safe down to 4 ohms. Has built in low pass filter and the whole thing is TINY! The system performance is pretty crappy, but thats to be expected. Total output is...well 70 watts on a 10". Provides decent low end enhancement but don't expect anything to rattle. Sound quality isn't horrible, no doubt helped by the sealed box. The sub is easily overpowered on a directed 1100d amp, even at 4 ohms. Starts smelling bad, then popping. Output is nice for about 5 seconds though. I suppose I suspected this, but figured I'd mention I took the system to its limits. With the exception of a kinda cool 70W amp, it's by and large a waste, even of $35. I think I just acquired a new specimen for the wall socket.
