I would think the XD and Walther would work well for you and your wife... I suggested a 9mm due to how cheap ammo is and if you and your wife take to shooting it could be used as a nice concealed carry pistol where as a 22 would be virtually useless in that sense... Rifle shooting is a whole new experience that I would suggest you take up after you get used to pistol shooting and decide if it's something you both can enjoy... Like I said though it is nice to see someone willing to get into as I'm sure you will enjoy it greatly once you become comfortable... Just remember firearms are a tool they can cause harm just like any other tool but used correctly they can be tons of fun, safe, and can be very usuful such as ultimately protecting you or your family one day...
