How is it a marketing scheme? You either need it the extra control or you dont. The 8445 is +$100-150 cheaper over the 8455 and it sounds every bit as good as it. They are not tricking you!! They are giving you OPTIONS. IF you need a deck for total control of an ACTIVE set up, 10 bands of PEQ, digi outs....go with the 8455 IF you are going to run a Passive fronstage anyways and 7bands of PEQ is enough for you save the +$100 and the 8445 is PLENTY. EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE SAME! The x-over slope's are more than adequate on the 8445. The novelty of the extra control on the 8455 sure is nice, but you always have you amps x-overs that you could put to work. I trust them being the closest to the speakers to work best at filtering anyways. NOW HAS ANYONE USED THE 8445 in 'ADVANCED MODE' (other than Dfcas) to verify how the x-over is setup? Judging by this, it appears the x-over is a comnied F/R split Sub x-over http://www.eclipse-web.com/cd/images/audio_customize.jpg I hardly considered my 8443 'useless', between the HU and xover on my amps the job was well taken care of and end result was still stellar sound. In all honesty, had the 8445 been out/available(it was not) at the time of my purchase I would've gotten it. All these bells n whistles are nice to have, but I find myself and many others that have minimal use for them. I'm the type that judges a deck by the fidelity it delivers with absolutely every whistle off- Thats why I'm am an Eclipse repeat buyer. I never had a prob x-over properly with amps at the time of install. 'Set it and forget it''.
